What are the signs of drug addiction?

Substance Abuse Disorder can vary from person to person. One definition of this disease is “when a person is addicted to a substance, such as a drug, alcohol or nicotine, they are not able to control the use of that substance. They continue taking it, even though it may cause harm (the individual may or may not be aware of the potential harm)” (Nordqvist, 2016). While that is true, it does not affect each person in the same way. One alcoholic can portray different signs of his or her problem than another would. Below are common symptoms of this disorder. Experiencing one of those mentioned does not mean you have an addiction, but many together can be a cause for concern.

Inability to stop taking substance
Withdrawal symptoms
Newfound health problems
Social sacrifices
Always having the substance on hand
Taking risks
Unable to deal with problems
Obsession with substance
Secrecy and solitude
Financial difficulties

Hi there great article, i've been reading a lot of your articles. Yes drug addiction or addiction to some other substances can cause a lot of problems in the long run. Friends and families should help those in need and that would be the best solution

It is actually quite sad that these numbers are on the rise and that with this new epidemic that the nation is faced with, we are still at a low rate of only 11% of this population are receiving some type of treatment.

Thank you for explaining that newfound health problems can indicate that someone has a drug addiction. I've been suspecting that my son is addicted to something for a while now, but I didn't realize that this could be one of the reasons why. I wondered where this came from, so I think we should get him some help to overcome all of this.
